What is semiconductor?

2023-03-08
The semiconductor industry is one of the key industries supported by the state and one of the most critical "bottleneck" industries. What is semiconductor?
All objects in life can be roughly divided into three categories according to their conductivity: conductors, semiconductors and insulators.
This is easy to understand. Objects either conduct electricity, or do not conduct electricity, or conduct electricity a little. It is this half-baked and unclear matter that gives physicists different space to play.
According to conductivity, it can be divided into:
Insulator: the conductivity is very low, ranging from 20-18S/cm to 10-8S/cm, such as fused quartz and glass;
Conductor: high conductivity, ranging from 104S/cm to 106S/cm, such as aluminum, silver and other metals.

Semiconductor: the conductivity is between insulator and conductor.

Semiconductors are usually made of silicon. Their conductivity is higher than that of insulators such as glass, but lower than that of pure conductors such as copper or aluminum. The conductivity and other properties can be changed by introducing impurities (called doping) to meet the specific requirements of the electronic components in which they reside. Semiconductors are also called semiconductors or chips. They can be found in thousands of products, such as computers, smart phones, devices, game hardware and medical devices.
From the perspective of materials, semiconductors, as the name implies, refer to materials whose conductivity is between conductors and insulators at room temperature. Integrated circuits can be formed by processing semiconductor materials, and integrated circuits can be packaged and tested to form chips.
